Research Highlight

Curt H. Barnes

I am currently a lecturer facilitating education and pursuing research with the School of Science at Walailak University. My research and professional interests span a diverse range of topics and taxa, from bird of prey conservation to reptile and amphibian natural history.  Ultimately, I aim to delve deeper into an interdisciplinary position while seeking technological solutions coupled with sound statistical inferences to ecological questions.

Snakebite has been recently labeled by the World Health Organization as a Neglected Tropical Disease. An estimated 5 million people are bitten every year, and more than 80,000 of those die. Despite this significant medical problem, there is limited study into the cause of it and even more of a disconnect between snake and human interaction study. This strongly hinders prevention methods. I have been fortunate to have been a part of a study investigating the direct interactions and consequences of Malayan kraits (Bungarus candidus) and students at my university (Suranaree University of Technology, Thailand), Hodges et al. (2021).
